Cosmetic\ndentistry is a method of professional oral care that focuses on improving the\nappearance of your mouth, teeth and smile. And although cosmetic dentistry\nprocedures are usually elective, rather than essential, some cases of treatment\nalso provide restorative benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most\ncommon procedures used in cosmetic dentistry are fairly simple, whereas others\nare more complex and require specialized care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inlays and Onlays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are\nalso known as indirect fillings, which are made by a dental laboratory, and\nthey are used when a tooth has mild to moderate decay or there is not enough\ntooth structure to support a filling. Provided there is no damage to the tooth\ncusps, according to Choice One\nDental Care, the inlay is placed directly onto the tooth surface. When\nthe cusp or a greater portion of the tooth is damaged, however, an onlay is\nused instead to cover the tooth’s entire surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inlays\nand onlays are made in a dental laboratory from composite resin material and\nattached to the teeth with adhesive dental cement. They provide support to\nstrengthen teeth, restore their shape and avoid any further decay or\ndeterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Composite Bonding<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Composite bonding refers to the repair of decayed,\ndamaged or discolored teeth using material that resembles the color of tooth\nenamel. Your dentist drills out the tooth decay and applies the composite onto\nthe tooth’s surface, then “sculpts” it into the right shape before\ncuring it with a high-intensity light. Also referred to as simply\n“bonding,” per the Consumer Guide to Dentistry, this effectively\ncovers the damage to the tooth and gives the appearance of a healthy tooth in\nits place. Bonding is one of the least expensive cosmetic dentistry procedures\navailable to patients with tooth decay, chipped or cracked teeth and worn-down\nedges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental Veneers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typically manufactured from medical-grade ceramic,\ndental veneers are made individually for each patient to resemble one’s natural\nteeth, according to Bruce Wilderman, DDS. They look exceptionally realistic and\ncan resolve numerous cosmetic problems, ranging from crooked teeth, to cracked\nor damaged enamel to noticeable gaps between two teeth. The dentist applies the\nveneer to the front of each tooth using a dental adhesive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teeth Whitening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most basic cosmetic dentistry\nprocedures, teeth whitening or teeth bleaching can be performed at your\ndentist’s office. Whitening should occur after plaque, tartar and other debris\nare cleaned from the surface of each tooth, restoring their natural appearance.\nTeeth can also be bleached to achieve an even lighter shade than this original\ncolor, according to the American Dental Association (ADA) Mouth Healthy site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the\nyears, teeth become stained and worn from food, drinks, medication and personal\nhabits such as smoking. Whitening coats the teeth and this procedure can be\ndone in the dental office or at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Implants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental\nimplants are used to replace teeth after tooth loss. The dentist inserts a\nsmall titanium screw into the jaw at the site of the missing tooth, which\nserves as the support for a crown. These implants are almost indistinguishable\nfrom the surrounding natural teeth, and once the bone and supporting tissue\nfuse to the implant, they are permanently secured into place. Patients need to\npractice diligent oral hygiene\nduring the implant placement period to clean plaque and food debris from the\narea.\n\nIf you’re considering cosmetic dentistry\nprocedures, it’s vital to find a cosmetic dentist who specifically offers the\noption you’re interested in.
